Have you ever been blown away by the phrasing of a sentence? That was me from the first sentence of the unique book. It is about people from.someplace else and more than that people with hope or at least with hope when they get here.I am an expat in another country. and what Calvin Baker said really related to me, but more than me. Imigrants who come with dreams and never really find home...they hope for ease and something better but seem to.just get the hard parts. On the streets where I live I see vendors whom I think of as the black birds because the are so often taking off in mass..street vendors without papers running away from the police. These are young guys,young enough to run, and then there are the medicaments....not a nice thing to look at and probably not the runners, but of them are here in this place with me. We all have to this one thing in common: we are outsiders.
Baker writes about this and more. An amazing read! IT IS ABOUT SO MANY ISSUES and so well written! all I Can say is stop everything and read it immediately.

Just ok...
Interesting thoughts and reflections from a traveler looking to understand a part of Spain. I loved the chapter with Maria and his visit to her home resulting in his understanding of begging as a job.
I didn't get much from the read. Mostly race and political rant and rave, not much about Spain.
I purchased this for an upcoming trip and found it good preparation for absorbing the culture when I get to Spain.
I haven't ever come across anything quite like this, and it's just short enough to keep my attention, although I do believe I can relate to it more as I am a foreigner living in Spain. It is a the "notes" of a man traveling through Spain, hanging out with immigrants and giving us an intimate peek at their lives. He draws few conclusions, leaving us to ours.
